Hostels ¿or cottages in Wellington? Hello, I'm going to see my son and I'm not sure we (inn or guest house) will be better, near Te Aro area if possible.
Please reply in "plain English" ...

I also recommend the Hotel Cambridge. It is a great little hotel. I stay there for some time (about 2 months) in both chambers of the hostel and hotel rooms. Although hotel rooms are very cheap and they offer everything you need. I would not recommend staying in the hostel rooms there only because they are very cramped and dark in that room in the hostel are concerned. In addition, if you plan to cook some of your own meals (I suppose if you're looking at hostels), the Cambridge kitchen is really small and not up to the devices, but they have the bar a little fun on the site that offers cheap meals!
Also, I also recommend the hostel, too. It is a great hostel CLEAN. They have single rooms, but if I remember correctly they do not have private bathroom? They are also very very small. What the rooms lack in size, the inn is for the size of the kitchen, helpful staff, tourist information office, TV area and community room ample lounging!
There are other hostels dotted around Wellington, but I think these two are my favorites. I'm not sure about the guest houses, but I think if you visit it would be more fun to stay in the city. Especially since most of downtown is within walking distance, but if you want to leave the city two hostels are located just seconds away from a bus stop!

Hostels are cheaper than guesthouses.
I would recommend Hotel Cambridge. This is very central and also offers private rooms hostel. Beside it is a hostel called Base X. This is a good hostel if you can not pay your room because they have women only rooms that you can share with other ladies.
A little more expensive but very nice is AJ - also in the same area.
It is very easy to access Te Aro Wellington Centre.
